We are the specialists at understanding you and food
There are two factors that influence our desire to eat; hunger and appetite. These two factors differ dramatically. Hunger is our primary physical drive to eat, and is controlled by our internal body mechanisms. On the other hand, appetite is our primary psychological drive to eat, which is affected by our external food choice mechanisms, such as sight and smell. Our appetite commonly encourages us to find and eat food, often in the absence of obvious hunger. Research tells us that in our society we are more likely to respond to external, appetite-related forces than to hunger-related forces, in choosing when and what to eat.

We understand that whether you are just a little overweight, or very overweight, it's upsetting to have an uneasy relationship with your body, appetite, and food. What foods you should and shouldn't eat, what you ate yesterday, what you may eat tomorrow; it feels like your weight and what you eat is forever on your mind. You've probably tried everything: dieting, bingeing, depriving yourself of nourishment, obsessing about weight, satisfying your emotions with food, and yo-yoing uncontrollably between clothing sizes. And undoubtedly you wish that one day you will be able to change it all, and finally have a successful relationship with yourself and food.

Well, the only permanent way to establish a healthy connection with yourself and food is to become a mindful eater; to say 'yes' and 'no' to food in just the right balance in order to maintain a healthy, comfortable weight. You can learn to eat the way mindful eaters do, naturally and instinctively, by joining Appetite Right. We want to spread the word that diets don't work!

As an adult learner, you can reprogram your thinking about food, eating, weight, exercise and your body. You can develop exceptionally effective strategies to deal with feelings rather than eating or focusing on weight, and you can change your behaviours so that they are in connection with good physical health. There are no diets, no pills, and no surgery in this weight loss program. It is a safe and effective way to lose healthy weight.

In order to assess your current weight status we have provided you with a couple of easy tools.

You are able to check your current weight status below by using our Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator. BMI is useful to assess the weight status of adults. It is a simple calculation using your height and current weight. To use the calculator below, simply enter your height in the required box and then enter your current weight. Once you have pressed the SUBMIT button we will advise you on your current weight classification according to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2006).

Height (m) Weight (kg) Your BMI =

Example: an adult with a height of 1.75 metres, and weight of 80kg, has a BMI of 26.
Your BMI is considered underweight.
Your BMI is considered to be in a normal range.

Another, important tool available to assess your current weight status is waist measurement. So get out the measuring tape now, and compare your waist size to these guidelines.

Take a look at the new Steven after he lost an amazing 23 kilograms.

"Losing all this weight has been an incredibly life-changing experience for me. Before trying Appetite Right I never would have thought appetite monitoring and awareness was so critical to losing weight. This is a simple, yet powerful concept that really works. I’d certainly recommend it to anyone who has previously struggled losing weight and wants to try a new approach. I haven’t felt this young and healthy in years!"

Steven had been overweight for nearly 20 years and was fed up with feeling unhealthy and out of shape. He had experienced little or no success with other programs and really wanted to do something to lose the weight. In 2006 he started Appetite Right's Guided Plus program; he was 106 kilograms and had a BMI of over 35. After carefully following the program his weight quickly began to drop. Within 4 months he had lost an amazing 23 kilograms and dropped several waist sizes. What was really exciting though, was that he never felt hungry and he was still able to enjoy eating tasty healthy foods. Today, Steven still follows the Appetite Right philosophies, and he is still losing weight. He has never looked back.

Before

While following our Guided Plus program, Margaret lost 5 kilograms and an amazing 11 centimetres off her waist.

"Thank you Appetite Right, your excellent program has turned my life around. After battling with my weight for years, I successfully lost 5 kilograms and 11 centimetres from my waist. My overall health also greatly improved, and I find I now have more energy enabling me to follow an intensive exercise routine. I would personally recommend Appetite Right to anyone who not only wants to lose weight, but also improve their health and lifestyle."

Margaret who is a qualified nurse in Victoria, acknowledged having reasonable knowledge of food and nutrition issues, as well as exercise. Yet this hadn't been enough to overcome her past weight loss problems. She also confessed to some common, yet critical behavioural weight loss issues such as emotional eating and motivation. Our Guided Plus program was the perfect answer for Margaret because the fortnightly consultations enabled us to help her make, and maintain, critical improvements in her eating behaviour. Margaret developed amazing new skills to overcome these eating behaviours that had restricted her for years.

Christine After

I was very overweight when I started the program and, to get back into a healthy weight range, I needed to lose about 25kg. Although I have struggled with my weight for most of my adult life I was able to maintain a healthy weight until about 3 years ago when we moved from Sydney to the Hunter Valley. This move also coincided with my husband being diagnosed with prostate cancer. In the three years we have been here I put on 20kg and, although I had tried numerous times to control my eating, nothing worked for more than a few days and I felt I was on a downward spiral into obesity and serious health problems. This only made me more depressed and therefore I ate even more!

I was desperate to find some way to change this pattern and lose the weight gradually and permanently. I had been looking on the internet for some program that acknowledged that the way I was eating had very little to do with hunger and a lot to do with my emotional state, self esteem etc.

Then I found Appetite Right! Everything on your website made perfect sense to me and didn't place emphasis on counting calories or eliminating certain foods. Your literature states that you can teach people to become normal eaters and that phrase really stayed in my head because I realised that, for my entire adult life, I have never been a "normal"eater.

Your program has been a revelation to me and, for the first time ever, I feel that I could continue eating this way for the rest of my life. Just knowing that, if you really do want to eat something - you can - seems to take away the desire to actually eat it! Also, if I do eat something I consider inappropriate I no longer revert to my old eating habits - I just go back to being a "normal"eater.

By the end of the program I had lost 11 kilograms in weight and a wonderful 14 centimeters off my waist, and I feel very confident that I can continue to lose weight at a gradual and healthy rate.

The fortnightly talks with you have been extremely helpful and I would recommend that everyone chooses this option when signing up. It's really good to talk directly to someone who has been through the same experience and can actually give advice based on that. I have also found the booklet to be invaluable and I refer to it constantly. The information on food choices and nutritional values is excellent and makes our shopping choices much simpler.

Sorry if I have raved on a bit here but I am so impressed with the program and what it has done for me, especially at a time when I felt that I was destined to be obese for the rest of my life. It is such a simple concept but presented in a very logical and positive way.

As an ex-Weight Loss Leader with another program, Sonia is very knowledgeable when it comes to the principles behind successful healthy weight management. Sonia knew that in order for her to achieve her own weight loss goals she needed to master the psychological side of her eating. When she joined our Guided Online program in early 2008, she was really interested to see how our unique psychological approach could help her.

Here's a little of Sonia's thoughts on weight loss issues in general, and also on how she believes the Appetite Right program helped her develop the critical skills needed to overcome her problem eating behaviours.

"Most people already know that losing weight is just a matter of increasing your energy out, and decreasing your energy in. It is so simple you would think anyone could do it if they put their mind to it. Why then are so many people unable to do so?

"I believe it is because for some people, emotional and mental barriers exist. Some of us use food to cope with life, similar to people who drink, take drugs, gamble etc. For myself and others that I know, our coping and comfort mechanism is food. I believe many people wrongly look for the answers to their weight loss problems with shakes, pills, diets etc. But these are all external things, and actually they should be looking internally at their mind and heart, because that is where the real answers lie."

"We actually need the psychological tools to help us turn these habits around, and only then can we be successful. From first hand experience dealing with people wanting to lose weight, I have seen over the last six years many people become frustrated and give up because they did not have the tools to cope with this problem."

"That is why your program is so fantastic! It is a simple, affordable method of understanding ourselves and overcoming these issues. You take us on a fabulous journey of self discovery. I have learnt so much about myself in the last month, that almost 20 years of 'dieting' could not help me with."

Here are just a few more of the testimonials we've received from our members:

Jane, age 54 - New South Wales. "I never used to understand how my friends could eat so much more than me and be so much thinner. I remember thinking that they must have a 'different body and brain' to me. I can't believe how wrong I was. You have taught me their secret! What a basic concept, yet it escaped me my whole life until I began your program. Appetite Right has been a wonderful help. Thank you!"

Sue, age 32 - Victoria. "I love this program! I had been working hard on changing my eating behaviours for the last three years, yet I still ate too much. Appetite Right gave me the exact tools I needed to become a "mindful eater". I just loved the phone consultations during the program. It felt great to know expert help was so close at hand. Now I'm eating with meaning and awareness nearly all the time. This is an enormous improvement from where I was just a short time ago."

Joan, age 57 - Queensland. "I am amazed that learning to be mindful about what, when and how much food I put in my mouth, could help me lose so much weight. I never lost this much weight during any of the other programs I had tried. It’s such an amazing feeling to know that I am in control of my eating. I know I can have dessert, wine, or whatever I want without feeling guilty. We are planning a family holiday soon, and I know I will have a great time eating wonderful food with my new eating skills!"

Julia, age 43 - South Australia. "This really has been a positive and life-changing experience for me. The major difference I found with this program from all the other things I tried in the past is that the focus is on me and how I feel, rather than just the food I'm eating. Appetite Right concentrates on the quality and pleasure of eating, not just food avoidance and deprivation. Now I am a mindful eater 90-95% of the time. It is a great gift to not ever have to diet again! Dimitra, I will recommend your program to others; it really is needed in so many lives."

Adrian, age 37 - Victoria. "I have struggled with the diet mentality for 10 years and now I am free. This program certainly changed my life. I was at a very low point when I started, and food seemed like the only thing that helped me feel better. Now I have re-learnt the way I approach eating, which has led to many positive changes in many areas of my life. This has truly been a lifestyle change, not just a diet!"

Grace, age 29 - New South Wales. "This program has inspired me to take ownership of my eating, exercise, and food choices. You have changed the way I think about nutrition and have extended my horizons when it comes to taking care of my own body and actually doing things that make me feel better. The fortnightly phone calls helped enormously. Now I am learning to incorporate this new way of thinking into my daily life. I feel so in charge, it is wonderful! Thank you so very much!"
